LOWELL THOMAS SURPRISED AT PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE SPORTS BANQUET IN N.Y. AS NEW SEASON'S FIRST SUBJECT OF "THIS IS YOUR LIFE"
Many Celebrities Present as Ralph Edwards Opens 1959-60 Wednesday Series
Ralph Edwards opened the 1959-60 season of '‘This Is Your Life" last night (Wednesday, Sept. 30) on the NBC-TV Network (1010:30 p.m. EDT) from the grand ballroom of New York City's Hotel Astor, by honoring Lowell Thomas, "sportsman, war correspondent, author, lecturer and world traveler."
Thomas was surprised while serving as master of ceremonies for the People-to -People Sports Banquet, attended by many noted personalities, almost any one of whom would have been a fitting subject for Edwards' biographical treatment.
Edwards traced Thomas' colorful career through a series of anecdotes told by the following guests: Mabel Barbee Lee, of Santa Barbara, Calif., one of Thomas' high school teachers; Count Felix von Luckner, of Hamburg, Germany, a longtime friend and the hero of the adventure story "The Sea Wolf"; Mrs. A. W. Oliver, of Denver, Colo., who acted as a "second mother" to Thomas in his boyhood; Thomas' wife, Frances; his only son, Lowell Thomas Jr.; his sister, Mrs. Raymond Thornburg; Prosper Buranelli, Thomas' "Man Friday" for 30 years; actress Beulah Bondi, a longtime friend; and Bertha Spafford Vester, of Jerusalem, Israel, the head of the American colony, whom Thomas once
termed "the greatest woman of our time."
