•PROJECT ECHO,’ SPECIAL HALF-HOUR DOCUMENTARY ON LATEST AMERICAN SPACE ACHIEVEMENT, PRESENTED ON NBC-TV NETWORK BY BELL SYSTEM
"Project Echo," a special half-hour documentary tele¬ vision program on the latest American achievement in space, will be presented over the NBC-TV Network tonight (Friday,
Aug. 12) at 9:30 p.m. EDT. The program will feature Chet Huntley and will be presented by the Bell System in co¬ operation with NBC News.
The telecast will graphically illustrate how a tele¬ phone call between Holmdel, N. J., and Goldstone, Calif., was bounced off a 100-foot aluminized plastic balloon in orbit 1,000 miles above the earth. The program will include "live" commentary as well as filmed segments of Project Echo prepara¬ tions and the launching of the Delta Launch Vehicle from Cape Canaveral early today (Friday) by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to put the balloon into orbit.
A filmed interview with Dr. John R. Pierce of the Bell Telephone Laboratories will be part of the telecast. He will describe how the human voice was transmitted by Bell scientists to the man-made mirror in space and bounced to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Goldstone.
Dr. Pierce will also discuss the long-range implica¬ tions of Project Echo tests, a series of space communications ex¬ periments that have taken a giant step toward the development of international telephony and television through the use of satellites .
The Bell purchase was placed through N. W. Ayer & Son Inc.
