NBC COLOR TELEVISION NEWS ‘GOLDEN CHILD, » ORIGINAL CHRISTMAS OPERA BY PAUL ENGLE AND PHILIP BEZANSON, WILL HAVE TV PREMIERE ON NBC ‘HALLMARK HALL OP FAME* COLORCAST FOR RELEASE MONDAY A.M., AUG, 15 "Golden Child, " an original 90-minute Christmas opera by Paul Engle and Philip Bezanson, will have its television premiere on the NBC-TV Network's "Hallmark Hall of Fame" colorcast Friday, Dec. 16 (8:30-10 p.m. EST), producer-director George Schaefer announced today. Patricia Neway, mezzo-soprano currently featured in "The Sound of Music" on Broadway, and widely known for her work with the New York City Opera and the NBC Opera series, will sing the role of Martha, the wife and mother of a migrating Iowa family which seeks refuge from a snowstorm on Christmas Eve at Sutter's Fort in California during the gold rush of 1849. Jerome Hines, distinguished basso star of the Metropolitan Opera, will portray Captain John Sutter. Hines will return to the U. S. from the Bayreuth Festival to join the cast in rehearsal. "Golden Child" will be taped next month. Paul Engle, who wrote the libretto, and Philip Bezanson the composer, are on the faculty of the State University of Iowa. They first wrote and produced "Golden Child" on the university campus, where it was sung by a cast of graduate students at the school's annual Fine Arts Festival last Summer.
