June 1, 1961 NBC NEWS CORRESPONDENT EDWIN NEWMAN TO BE MODERATOR OF "THE NATION’S FUTURE" SERIES ON NBC-TV NETWORK NBC News correspondent Edwin Newman will become moderator of NBC-TV’ s news-making debate series, "The Nation’s Future," beginning Saturday, June 10, it was announced today by Arthur Barron, producer of bhe program under supervision of executive producer Irving Gitlin. Newman will replace John K. M. McCaffery, who has been noderator since the series went on the air Nov. 12, i960. McCaffery fill undergo surgery during the Summer. The debate to be broadcast June 10 (9:30-10:30 p.m. EDT) will De taped in New York June 6. Newman, who has a key role in NBC News' coverage of President Kennedy's trip to Europe, will fly to New York for ;he taping. The question to be debated is "Does the United States Need 1 More Restrictive Trade Policy?" Jackson E. Spears, vice president of Burlington Industries, Inc., will take the affirmative stand and Bharles H. Percy, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Bell & Howell Company, will present the negative case. "We are delighted to have Mr. Newman, one of NBC’s most .ncisive and eloquent news analysts, as moderator of 'The Nation's hiture' series," Barron said. "His first-hand knowledge of domestic md foreign politics and his broad range of experience in many other ireas of news assures us of the same high caliber job that John lcCaffery has done for this program.
