June 1, 1961 NBC NEWS LEADS BY HOURS IN COVERAGE OF ASSASSINATION OF TRUJILLO WITH SWIFT TV AND RADIO REPORTS NBC News led by hours yesterday (May 31) in its coverage of the assassination of Dominican dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina — broadcasting the first report of the assassination attempt and the first identification of the general who carried out the attack. The first report of an attempt on Trujillo's life was carried on the "NBC News Day Report" on the NBC -TV Network at 12:55 p.m. EDT and on the "New s -on -the -Hour " on NBC Radio at 1 p.m. EDT - about two hours before it was confirmed by White House News Secretary Pierre Salinger in Paris. The report from Port au Prince, Haiti, by correspondent Bernard Diederich said that the assassination attempt had been made Tuesday night. Diederich, quoting a traveler who arrived in Haiti from the Dominican Republic, said that people were being prevented from leaving the Dominican capital of Ciudad -Trujillo and that the city was under heavy police guard. This report was further substantiated by correspondent John Hlavacek, who was immediately dispatched to Ciudad -Trujillo from his base in Kingston, Jamaica. Before leaving Jamaica, Hlavacek quoted sources there saying that Ciudad -Trujillo airport was ringing with soldiers and that no passengers were permitted to board or to leave a plane that landed there.
