ADMIRAL GEORGE W. ANDERSON, CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS, COMMENDS NBC NEWS FOR FULL-HOUR TV SPECIAL ON LOSS OF SUBMARINE THRESHER
Admiral George W. Anderson, Chief of Naval Operations, has commended NBC News for its full-hour special program "covering so thoroughly and effectively" the loss of the nuclear submarine Thresher. The program was presented April 11 on the NBC-TV Network.
In a letter April 12 to Robert E. Kintner, President of the National Broadcasting Company, Admiral Anderson said:
"The Navy as a whole and I in particular are deeply indebted to you and the magnificent staff of the National Broadcasting Company responsible for the one -hour documentary last evening covering so thoroughly and effectively our loss of Thresher. While programs of the caliber of Mr. Martin Agronsky's presentation last evening are characteristic of NBC's thorough coverage of world events, the very few hours available during which this nationwide assembly of material was accomplished made the end result all the more remarkable and outstanding.
"In this Navy tragedy we in blue uniforms once again find ourselves looking out for our own, a capability in which we take great and jealous pride. Your graphic documentation of this fact most effectively presented to your audience an awareness of the hazards of the sea and of the type of men who daily challenge these hazards as a matter of routine accomplishment. Of particular importance to me was the very appropriate way in which the program ended by having the captain of one of the Thresher's sister ships set forth quite simply
