At 8 p.m. EDT, NBC Tokyo correspondent John Rich reported on an audio circuit that Cooper had completed his first pass over Red China. Rich reported in a special program at midnight Wednesday that Peking Radio had not yet mentioned the Cooper flight.

A TV special program at 3 a.m. EDT today featured an exclusive interview with NASA Administrator James Webb which had been filmed earlier in Hartford, Conn. Webb called the flight a "splendid day for the U. S. " and revealed that if it were successful, it would be the last one-man Mercury flight. He said the first "ballistic" flight leading to the Gemini flight series would be made early next year.
Taped coverage of a recent news conference at Cape Canaveral in which the nine new astronauts described their areas of responsibility was a feature of a special program at 4 a.m. EDT today.
A parachute escape system for America’s two -man Gemini space capsule was revealed in an interview on the expanded "Today" show by Martin Caidin, author and expert on space matters. He said he had learned of this system from astronauts Cooper and Alan B. Shepard Jr. The new system would be similar to an ejection system used in Russian space craft, he said.
