news December 6, 1957 NEW PRODUCTION OF 'AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS' BY NBC OPERA COMPANY WILL BE COLORCAST ON 'NBC MATINEE THEATER' CHRISTMAS DAY A new production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" will be offered by the NBC Opera Company on Christmas Day, Dec. 2p as a pre¬ sentation of NBC MATINEE THEATER (NBC-TV colorcast, 3-4 p.m., EST). This will mark the eighth presentation of the Christmas opera on NBC-TV, This NBC-commissioned opera was first presented on Christmas Eve, 1951* and received universal critical praise for the music and the libretto, both by Gian Carlo Menotti. Since then it has been seen many hundreds of times all over the world in theatres, opera houses and churches. In this country alone it has had almost 1,000 performances. Otis Riggs designed the new sets. The costumes are the familiar ones created by Eugene Berman for the original production, Riggs, who is one of the leading designers on TV, received high praise last year for his designs for the NBC Opera Company production of "War and Peace."
