JACK TRACY ROOM 320 2 COP I ES X-H January 2, FIRST WORD OF BATISTA'S FALL RECEIVED BY NBC NEWS IN NEW YORK AND THEN CIRCULATED TO OTHER MEDIA First word of Cuban President Batista being overthrown was received by NBC News in New York and then circulated to other news media. A telephone call from NBC News Correspondent Ed Scott in Havana flashed the news at 5:08 a.m., EST, yesterday (Jan. l) and was immediately put on the air and telephoned to wire services. Scott's work gave NBC a 35-minute break on the story. At the time, Scott's telephone wire was the only direct contact with the Cuban capital. Radio circuits were not operating and telephone calls were not getting into Havana. Throughout the early hours of the revolutionary coup, Scott's information was fed to NBC listeners and used also by the news services . The telephone line has been maintained uninterruptedly to Scott's room in the Hotel Sevilla Biltmore except for a few hours last night to let the NBC Newsman get some sleep. Also on the scene and supplying reports for broadcast throughout yesterday and today are NBC Correspondent Herb Kaplow and Cameraman Bob Blair.
