RICCARDO MARTIN, Tenor
Riccardo Martin enjoys the distinction of being the first American tenor to be engaged for leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera House. This young artist (he is only thirty) was born in Ken¬ tucky, and quite early in life seemed to have considerable talent as a composer. His parents sent him abroad for study, and, after spending sev¬ eral years in Italy and Germany, he opened a studio in New York, devoting himself to composi¬ tion and teaching.
It was during this period that young Martin discovered that he had a voice worth cultivating, and, on the advice of Dr. Holbrook Curtis, went to Paris, where he studied with Sbriglia and Jean de Reszke. His debut in opera took place in Nantes, France, in 1904, when he sang Faust.
Later, in Verona, he appeared in Andrea Chenier Copy't Dupont with such success that he was engaged for Mr. MARTIN
Russell s San Carlo Opera Company, which
toured the United States in 1906-1907. Martin's triumph with this Company made his Metropolitan engagement a foregone conclusion, and in the summer of 1907 he was signed or a term of years. Martin s voice is not only ample in volume, but he can phrase with delicacy, and the tones of his upper register are remarkable for their beauty.

Giuseppe Campanari was born in Venice, and in early life played the ’cello at La Scala, Milan. Young Campanari was ambitious, however, and endeavored to improve his naturally good voice at every opportunity. In 1 884 he was engaged by the Boston Sym¬ phony Orchestra, and after arriving in America took up vocal studies in earnest.
Campanan’s great voice is always under perfect control, and he is equally at home in the sustained dignity of the Traviata aria or the brilliant dash of the Toreador song.
