How did this amazing master capture the inner image of the representation, how did he contrive to discover in a roughly cut scene the logic of its composition, how did he find appropriate musical images for all he saw, how did he find time to score his music for the orchestra with such an astounding effect, and, moreover, work for hours together with our ace sound engineer Volsky and operator Bogdankevich to produce a sound track with a multi-microphone method never used before in our studio?
There was very little time at our disposal. But, however fast the work was progressing, Fira Tobak, my wonderful long-time montage assistant, and I always had the material for the audio-visual combinations ready at hand.
There was very little time at our disposal, but there was no need to make sacrifices: in all important sequences the audio-visual combinations were brought to a level of perfection which could not have been surpassed had we had twice as much time to work on them. We have Prokofiev to thank for this, for his is a combination of a brilliant talent, an unheard-of level of professionalism and ability to develop a terrific tempo.
In this he is a match for our large crew and for the studio as a whole whose energy and enthusiasm alone made it possible to fulfil such an enormous task in so short ia time.
Our theme was patriotism.
Whether we have tackled it successfully is for the Soviet audiences to say.

TRUE WAYS OF INVENTION
