Mel Jolley, that young, personable skipper of our very important Century in Hamilton has been in the entertainnent business from the very first day he earned a buck at the age of fourteen ... Mel's birthplace is St. Thomas, in which city he obtained his schooling, having graduated with an Honour Matric. His entry into the world of entertainment was via a brief spell at the Casino dance hall in Port Stanley, from which he graduated to assistant manager of the Port Stanley ballroom ... This took care of the yoars from 1929 to 1933. In 1934 Mol started as an usher at the Tivoli = Later the Granada in St; Thomas, and from there moved over to the Capitol where he worked a stint under Ted Doney, and later Les Preston. About a year later, was moved +o the Capitol in London as assistant to Bill Trudeli.
In 1941 came the big break, and Mei was on his own, &3 manager of tho Golumbia, back in St. Thomas ooo Since then he’s been kept on the go, hopping from St. T. to Toronte, te Trenton, Welland, Oshawa, and finally his present assignment in Hamilton. He likes it there, and while he has learned to be cautious in such matters, he feels that he is safe in letting his family call it "Home",
Oh yes oo. our Mel has a family ... He married Jane Cupples in 1939, and they have two youngsters to prove it ... Sylvia Joy 12, and Jimmy 7, and don't think the young ‘Uns don't make capital of their dad's profession, at school.
Mel docen't let any grass grow under his feet ... To date he is a member (in good standing, I hope) of the United Chureh ... 2 32nd degree Mason and Shriner oe. Past president of the Local Junior Chamber of Commerce ooo a member of the Hamilton Kiwanis Club ... Shrina Glub oo. Scottish Rite Club ... Men's Press Club ... and is on the publicity committee of the Easter Seal campaim. I nearly forgot o.oo he is also a past president of the Hamilton Theatre Managers’ Association. He is an important and valued momber of his community ... and runs a good, and successful theatre.
By way of hobbies ...0 Mel enjoys travelling with his family during vacations, and still likes driving, in spite of his sad experience a couple of years ago .o.. He likes to putter around the house on weekeends, and on his -occasional night off ... you guessed it ..o. he takes in @ show.
