Ballyhoo (1952-61) was published by Famous Players Canadian Corporation as a mimeographed internal sales and theatre managers’ newsletter. Editor, Dan Krendel, had been division manager of the Ontario ‘B’ District since 1942, and initially created Ballyhoo in 1952 to circulate weekly updates for a regional sales contest. Ontario ‘B’ District Ballyhoo continued until 1955 as a tool for sharing and incentivizing new sales techniques and publicity methods as the movie business declined in the face of television and the baby boom.

In Fall 1955, Profit Blitz for ‘Fitz’ was a nationwide sales contest, named for Famous Players’ president J. J. Fitzgibbons, honouring his 25th year as head of the business. Dan Krendel was made National Drive Captain and edited a weekly newsletter for the campaign.

From 1956 until at least 1957, National Ballyhoo was published weekly with Krendel as editor. He continued the style and content developed earlier for his Ontario ‘B’ District, but now extended vastly for a chain-wide coast to coast scale. Ballyhoo’s sharing promotional tools came at a time of contracting box office as television and automobile ownership became prevalent in the mid-1950s.

By 1960 until at least 1961, Time Out for Ticket Talk continued as a mimeographed newsletter, edited by Norman Barker of the head office publicity department. Time Out was compiled on a less ambitious scale than Ballyhoo. Compared to the earlier national compilation of local publicity gimmicks, Time Out often contained only a single memo or reproduced local story, and was often undated and only informally edited.

In addition the station borrowed ; the album ef SEVEN BRIDES music from Connie's Musis Center, and played it in its entirety on their HHS Neighbour" program, for two sonsecubive days ..0 with lots of plugs for the theatre. Gonnie's also devoted their front window to an excellent display of posters, records and sheet music. Rouse’s Music store duplicated the deal. : fhis I was very happy to see ... A half-page story about Eddie and his thirty five years with Famous Players 0. to tie ia with our company’s thirty fifth anniversary. Good photo of Ed, and his history from the day he first started with use I was in Galt last woek, and Ed proudly showed me a personal note he had received on House of Commons stationery, from his friend the local M.P. who happened to notice the story. Ed is held in very high esteem by the Galt citizenry ... amd £ was glad to see him get this public recognition. REGENT = OSHAWA Well, looks like Charlie's found the groove, and I have a pretty nifty campaign on SEVEN BRIDES on ny desk to prove it. I have tear sheets of three excellent co-ops .o-. with Collette Beauty Salon, Jack Biddulph Appliances, and Horwich Credit Jewellers ... Good tie-in copy directing attention to the feature and theatre was used in each. Good window displays were set up in the appliance store, Horwich's and Lee Music store ... Ten Lustre Creme displays were spotted in drug stores in the down town section. A good off-theatre=page scene appeared in the Times-Gazette on SEVEN BRIDES, as woll as the continuation of the J SAW deal, six days a week. The local radio station plugged the music from the pie continuously, prior to and during the rum, with good pic and theatre eredits, Displays in the Genosha Hotel, and on the luneh counter at the Metropolitan store. CAPITOL = NORTH BAY What gives? oo. I do have an entry from Robert, but 4t°s from hunger. Just about enough to keep him from losing his monthiy bonus points. Palangio Garage put in a fair window display on KNOCK On WOOD ... Similar displays in the Town and Country Restaurant, and the local bus terminal. Bob did a lot of work om the Canadian Players show ooo no direet plugs ... but plenty of good P.R.
