Ballyhoo (1952-61) was published by Famous Players Canadian Corporation as a mimeographed internal sales and theatre managers’ newsletter. Editor, Dan Krendel, had been division manager of the Ontario ‘B’ District since 1942, and initially created Ballyhoo in 1952 to circulate weekly updates for a regional sales contest. Ontario ‘B’ District Ballyhoo continued until 1955 as a tool for sharing and incentivizing new sales techniques and publicity methods as the movie business declined in the face of television and the baby boom.

In Fall 1955, Profit Blitz for ‘Fitz’ was a nationwide sales contest, named for Famous Players’ president J. J. Fitzgibbons, honouring his 25th year as head of the business. Dan Krendel was made National Drive Captain and edited a weekly newsletter for the campaign.

From 1956 until at least 1957, National Ballyhoo was published weekly with Krendel as editor. He continued the style and content developed earlier for his Ontario ‘B’ District, but now extended vastly for a chain-wide coast to coast scale. Ballyhoo’s sharing promotional tools came at a time of contracting box office as television and automobile ownership became prevalent in the mid-1950s.

By 1960 until at least 1961, Time Out for Ticket Talk continued as a mimeographed newsletter, edited by Norman Barker of the head office publicity department. Time Out was compiled on a less ambitious scale than Ballyhoo. Compared to the earlier national compilation of local publicity gimmicks, Time Out often contained only a single memo or reproduced local story, and was often undated and only informally edited.

Gusas the two must go hand in hand ooo He arranged for a colouring contest in the pages or the Hamilton Review ... the Review van a 400 Line ad gratis, and even paid for the seene mat whieh was used as the basis for the contest. Prizes consisted of guest admissions to see HANSEL AND GRETEL. The Health Bread Bakery baked a terrifie HANSEL AND GRETEL gingerbread cake house which was used as the first prize, after being effectively displayed in their main windew fer a full week before the event ..-. The Review ran a front page stery on the winners at the end of the contest. The cake heuse was prasented te the winner in the window of the bake shop «oe. a picture of the presentation will appear in eme of thelr carly edi tien o Paul contacted the lecal marionette club and arranged for the loan of a number of HANSEL AND GRETEL puppets .-. These were displayed in two separate windews of the Right Heuse, one of Hamilton's important department stores. Naturally, goed art and theatre cepy found thelr way into the display. O'Brien News Agency tied in on the wonder books, and bannered all their trucks ... Five of the better music stores game through with goed window displays ... Heintzman's, Hoody's, Bert Rymal's, Anne Foster's and Hurst's Furniture. Two additional, excellent windows were dressed in Dunean'’s and Jewill Bros., tying in on their fairy tale books, jigsawa, colouring boeks etc. Anether good window in Bach's Drapery store, on their fairyland draperies. George Westen Limited were prevailed upon to supply FREE licorice suckers to the first 400 children attending the Saturday matinee perfermance. This leoks like about it, and for my dough, ain't bad. Niece going Paul ... Let's have more of the same. CAPITOL |= GALT Eddie reports that his I SAW feature in the local daily is stili attracting attention ... I note that on WHITE FEATHER he again managed to placa a good mounted one-shest in the window of Connie's Music Genter ... A similar display in Rouse's Musie Store. GK GR used the transcription provided by Fex, spotting announcements once in the morning and ence in the afternoon during the run. Regular “Hi Neighbour" and “Capitol Shewtime" pregrama giving Eddie plenty of boosts. Ed's confection bar is very tastefully decorated .o.. but since he's right in tha middle of enlarging it at the moment, he adds that we ain't seen nothin’ yet o.. until he's all through ...
