If he is in bed at that time and finds he cannot sleep, he reads William Dean Howells. , His parents wanted him to take a course at a Polytechnic College in California, but he obtained an engagement with a stock company in Xew Orleans instead. His beard grows so fast he often has to shave twice a day when he is working.
