Six days a week he’s up at 5: 40 every morning in order to be on his job at 7:00 for twelve or more hours a day. Every minute of his day is filled with the tedious, nerve-racking job of teaching a man to fly, to relax his tension, to be at ease in the air and to be able to solo within his specified time. To the student who falters in his course he must be parent, friend and adviser to the love-lorn, all in one. “What kind of letters is your mother or sweetheart writing?” he asks. For nine times out of ten worried letters from mothers or no letters at all from the girl friend can throw a young flier off his beam. To wash men out is one of the hardest tasks he has’ to perform. And yet for their own safety, as well as that of others, it must be done. Every man who finishes his course by no means is finished in the mind and heart of this man.
