I flew to London for a few days recently to find out what Liz Taylor and Richard Burton are up to now. I found out plenty. But I’d like to start this account with one particular little story — involving Liz alone. . . . It was a bitter cold afternoon late last January when they wheeled her into the London Clinic and up to an examination room on the fifth floor — the same floor where she’d lain seriously ill and near death just two years earlier. A reporter who was present in the hospital lobby noted with rather oblique humor that “Liz was certainly the most chic-looking patient this staid old place has seen since 1961, the time of her last emergency visit.
