ORPHANS OF THE STORM (1922) 123 Despite Broken Blossoms and Way Doun East, Griffith's productions as a whole had not been too profitable since The Birth of a Nation. With the idea of recouping his losses with an elaborate best seller, he produced Orphans of the Storm, a screen version of The Two Orphans. The Gish sisters, Lillian and Dorothy, played the title roles. BELOW The cast of Orphans of the Storm was good, and the production— as the guillotine scene below illustrates—was colorful and elaborate, but something was wrong. The picture was not a great success. The man in the straw hat on the scaffold in this production shot is Griffith.
