FOOLISH WIVES ( 1922) 127 Mention has been made of von Stroheim's lordly disregard of expense in his productions. Here is Exhibit A, the Monte Carlo set he used in Foolish Wives. It cost $200,000. BELOW John Gilbert played his first roles where so many others did, at the Ince Studios. From Ince he went to Fox, where he was soon recognized as a coming young leading man. In 1922 Fox entrusted him with the lead in a new Monte Cristo, directed by Emmett J. Flynn. Though a success, he had yet to attain great popularity.
