ABIES IRISH ROSE (1928) 209 Another synchronized-sound-effects picture of the year was the screen version of that record-run play, Abie's Irish Rose. In this scene, we have the two parents, played by J. Farrell MacDonald and Jean Hersholt, with Buddy Rogers as Abie, and Nancy Carroll as Rose. Jean Hersholt also appeared as the storm center of another synchronized picture, Battle of the Sexes, directed by David Griffith for United Artists. Here, Hersholt, a fairly tired businessman who has become involved with Phyllis Haver, a blonde gold digger, is having a bit of an argument with Don Alvarado and Sally O'Neill. Everybody wore spats in those days.
