Jesse L. Lasky scooped the industry when he signed opera star Geraldine Farrar to appear in three pictures to be filmed in eight weeks. For this work she was paid $20,000. Also she was furnished a house, servants, motor car and groceries during her sojourn in Hollywood, plus a private railroad car for her transportation to and from New York. Her first film was the opera "Carmen," and it was a great success. Wallace Reid played Don Jose and Pedro de Cordoba, Escamillo. The Lasky Company also announced the signing of film stars Blanche Sweet and Carlyle Blackwell and stage stars Fannie Ward, Lou Tellegen, Edna Goodrich, Victor Moore, Charlotte Walker, Edgar Selwyn, Laura Hope Crews, Ina Claire, Donald Brian, Edith Wynne Matthison, Theodore Roberts. Edith Taliaferro, Valeska Suratt and Rita Jolivet. It was the film debut for all of them, but only Fannie Ward, Victor Moore, Lou Tellegen and Theodore Roberts remained screen stars. Dustin Farnum, first star Lasky ever signed, made a film version of his stage play, "Cameo Kirby."
