With Edgar Selwyn, former actor and an established theatrical producer, and Margaret Mayo, a playwright, he formed the Goldwyn Pictures Corp. With much fanfare, he announced the signing of film favorites Mae Marsh and Mabel Normand, stage stars Maxine Elliott, Jane Cowl and Madge Kennedy, and from opera, Mary Garden. They also signed "eminent authors" and exploited them with the idea of creating a demand for authors' films. These included Rex Beach, Rupert Hughes, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Sir Gilbert Parker and Elinor Glyn. This proved that the stars, and not the authors, were profit providers. On September 9, they released their first picture, "Polly of The Circus," from Margaret Mayo's famous play, starring Mae Marsh.
