De Mille, so when Triangle folded he cast her in his production "For Better, For Worse." "Don't Change Your Husband" and "Male and Female" followed. It was the beginning of a prosperous association, and a few years later Miss Swanson was Paramount's most valuable star and was drawing a salary of $20,000 a week. "The Miracle Man," a George Loane Tucker production released by Paramount, started Lon Chaney, Thomas Meighan and Betty Compson on their road to stardom. The Paramount-Artcraft star system now included Marguerite Clark, Douglas Fairbanks, William S. Hart, Elsie Ferguson, Wallace Reid, Billie Burke, Vivian Martin, Ethel Clayton, Charles Ray, Dorothy Gish, Robert Warwick, Dorothy Dalton, Bryant Washburn, Lila Lee, Enid Bennett, and the comedy team of Douglas MacLean and Doris May. On the Fox lot William Farnum was the big money-maker while Tom Mix and George Walsh were gaining in popularity. Theda Bara was losing out and toward the end of the year she left Fox to appear on the stage in "The Blue Flame." Colleen Moore, who appeared in Selig, Christie and Triangle films, became Tom Mix's leading lady. Blanche Bates, famous Belasco stage star, made a film appearance in "The Border Legion" produced by an independent company.
