THE BIG FOUR OF UNITED ARTISTS DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, MARY PICKFORD, CHARLES CHAPLIN, D. W. GRIFFITH Q 2 Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charles Chaplin and D. W. Griffith, four of the biggest names in pictures, formed the United Artists Corporation with Hiram Abrams as its president. On March 27, Fairbanks and Miss Pickford were united in marriage. They were the king and queen of filmland, and their home in Beverly Hills, named Pickfair, became the center of the film capital's social activities. Another outstanding event was the discovery by Chaplin of Jackie Coogan. The story goes that Jackie winked at Chaplin in a Los Angeles railway station and was given the role in "The Kid" which skyrocketed little Jackie Coogan to stardom.
