It was far from perfect, but it was better than any of its predecessors. "Ben Hur" was hailed as the outstanding picture of the year. "Variety," a German import with Emil Tannings and Lya de Putti, was also acclaimed. Jannings finally was lured to America by Paramount. "Red" Grange, a football hero, was paid $300,000 for making a film. Paramount had had success with James Barrie's "Sentimental Tommy" and "Peter Pan," and scored again with his "A Kiss For Cinderella." Valentino's last film was "The Son of The Sheik." From the stage came Eddie Cantor, Beatrice Lillie, W. C. Fields and Gilda Gray to make films.
