working in England, I believe, in "Madame Pompadour," with Dorothy Gish. See Blondie, and Station B-L-A-H.
A George O'Brien Fan. — I'm glad I haven't got a fan on a cold day like this ! George's new picture is "Sunrise," adapted from Sudermann's "Trip to Tilsit." There are several George O'Brien clubs. The George O'Brien Athletic Club sends out his photos to members — write to Ralph Savy, 17 Edgewood Street, Stafford Springs, Connecticut. No, Josie Sedgwick did not play in Evelyn Brent's picture, "The Jade Cup." Violet Palmer was the only other woman in the cast besides Evelyn. Josie's newest picture is "Outlaw Love." The leading players in "Havoc" were George O'Brien, Madge Bellamy, Walter McGrail, Margaret Livingston, Leslie Fenton, and David Butler ; in "The Flaming Frontier," Hoot Gibson, Anne Cornwall, Dustin Farnum, Ward Crane, Kathleen Key, Eddie Gribbon, and George Fawcett. Tom Mix doesn't give his exact age, but he is in his forties, William S. Hart in his fifties.
Grace Marena. — I'm sorry, but Frank Puglia has never been sufficiently prominent on the screen for me to have a record of his films. You are the first person who has asked me about him. PicturePlay, as far as I know, has never published a story about him, nor a picture.
Nydia. — Who would I say is the most popular actor on the screen? I should hesitate to commit myself, but the box offices report that Tom Mix is. John Gilbert was born July 10, 1895, in Logan, Utah. "Heart of the Hills," with Mary Pickford, was one of his first pictures. His newest is "Twelve Miles Out." Ronald Colman is English, and in his thirties. His first screen appearance in America was opposite Lillian Gish in "The White Sister." He has just been making "King Harlequin." The very fact that Richard Dix does not play in big specials makes him more popular — his films are shown in all the tiny towns that can't afford specials.
Rah ! Rah ! Rah ! — I suppose you're cheering because of all the work you've given me to do. When I get all your questions answered, I don't see how this department can continue — there won't be any questions left to answer. Yes, I think Constance Bennett was one of the most glamorous young ladies on the screen, and I hope she comes out of retirement. She is the daughter of Richard Bennett and Adrienne Morrison Bennett, both well known on the stage, and she was a dancer before she began playing on the screen. Bebe Daniels was born January 14, 1901, and played on the stage at the age of four. She was about fourteen when she began playing in pictures. She has a secretary, as have most stars, to answer her fan mail. In "The Crowded Hour," Kenneth Harlan was her leading man, Eddie Burns in "The Manicure Girl," Robert Frazer in "Miss Bluebeard." James Hall's films are "The Campus Flirt," "Hotel Imperial," "Stranded in Paris," and "Love's Greatest Mistake." Ivy Harris had the leading feminine role in "The Potters." Iris Gray has played in "The Popular Sin," "High Hat," and "Love's Greatest Mistake." "Buddy" Rogers has the lead in "Wings," with Clara Bow. Frances Howard played opposite Richard Dix in "The Shock Punch," Mae Busch in "The Christian." Louise Brooks is playing opposite Adolphe
a Vilma Banky Club — Donald Phillips, president, 215 West Twenty-third Street, New York City. Dolores Costello Club — Francis Wilson, Blountstown, Florida. Picture-Play published interviews with your favorites as follows : Bebe Daniels, January, 1925 ; Richard Dix, September, 1926; Betty Bronson, December, 1925; Mary Brian, August, 1925; Colleen Moore, May, 1924, and January, 1927; William Collier, Jr., July, 1925 ; Dolores Costello, June, 1926, "The Sketchbook;" Helene Costello, September, 1925 ; Dorothy Mackaill, March, 1927 ; Vilma Banky, February, 1926.
Marguerite M. — Did I play the weather vane in "East Is West?" You've got me all wrong — I played the piccolo. Anna Q. Nilsson was born in Ystad, Sweden — she doesn't say when. Louise Fazenda was born in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1895. Blossom Bremen I know little or nothing about ■ — oh, let's be accurate, make it nothing. I suppose you know that Patsy Ruth Miller comes from St. Louis and is about twenty; her screen career dates from about the time of "The Affairs of Anatol," in which she was one of the dozens of feminine players. She has never been married. I don't know where Luciano Albertini is; in fact, I never did know. Einar Hansen was born in New Stockholm, Sweden, and played on the stage there. He toured all over the Scandinavian countries, played in films in Sweden, and was "discovered," I understand, by Corinne Griffith, who engaged him for the male lead in "Into Her Kingdom." Since then he has played leads in "Her Big Night," with Laura La Plante, "The Lady in Ermine" and "The Masked Woman." He is engaged at this writing on "Fashions for Women," with Esther Ralston starred. Einar is tall and, unlike most Scandinavians, dark. Arthur Rankin free lances and does not give his home address, so I don't know where to suggest your writing him.
Auburn Hair. — How I envy you down in Florida as we shiver to press ! Anna Q. Nilsson's middle name is Querentia. I'm sorry I have not heard of Frances Fuller ;• perhaps she has not. yet been given anything but bits to play. Many stars will send their photographs free, but it is nicer to inclose a quarter with your request, as the expense of their fan mail runs up into thousands of dollars a year.
M. C. — The only Greeks in the movies that I know of are George Rigas and Lou Tellegen. Lou is half Greek, half Dutch.
Just a Fan. — I'm glad you liked Jack Joyce as well as you expected to. Yes, I agree with you that Marc MacDermott is a wonderful actor, but he isn't the matineeidol type, so there is little demand for interviews with him. Earl Metcalfe has been in movies for many years and was, as you say, quite well known at one time. He plays in pictures only occasionally now; you can reach him, I think, at the Lambs' Club, 130 West Forty-fourth Street, New York City. He has been working recently with Josie Sedgwick in "Outlaw Love," a Universal film. Randle Ayrton is an English actor. The only address I can suggest for him is care of British National Pictures, Inc., 565 Fifth Avenue, ' New York City. Your letter would doubtless be forwarded to him. "Nell Gwyn" was made in England by that company, with an all-English cast in support of Dorothy Gish. She has been making a series of films in England for the
DO YOU say "who" when you should say "whom"? Do you say "between you and I" instead of "between you and me"? Do you mispronounce common words in your speech or use them incorrectly when you write?
Many a man has been held down all his life and suffered untold embarrassment because of mistakes in English. You do not need to make these mistakes any longer. Right at home, in spare time, in the privacy of your own room, you can make up the education you missed in the days that you should have been at school.
The International Correspondence Schools will teach you, just as they have taught thousands of other men, by a simple new method which shows you instinctively which word to use and how to use it.
