GAIL PATRICK It is some four years since GAIL PATRICK made her entry into Hollywood as one of the winners of the “ Panther IVoman ” beauty contest held by Paramount, and during that time she has completely changed. To begin with, she was not at all keen on acting—she had taken her. law degrees at the University of Alabama and was determined to be a successful lawyer. So when she Was offered a contract (which as her own lawyer she handled herself), her disinterestedness made the company raise their first salary offer by twenty-five per cent. And a twelve weeks' lay-off clause (twelve Weeks' unpaid holiday ) she had reduced to two weeks. Gail is one of the proofs that to interest Holly- wood, the best thing to do is to show Hollywood that you are not in- terested. However, she signed the contract, and having changed her mind about being a lawyer, decided that she had better do something towards being an actress—especially in her appearance. She studied four actresses—Norma Shearer, for her walk »' Kay Francis, for her way of wearing clothes; Claudette Colbert, for the impression of spontaneous enjoyment she gives ; and Katharine Hepburn, for the way in which she uses her hands. Her spare time she spent in posing for “ stills," and it is to Johnny Engstead, the “ still ” publicity man, that she gives most of the credit for the change in her. It Was due to his infinite patience and pains that she posed for innumerable pictures, until her new grace and assurance began to be noticeable. She made her film debut as leading lady to Kent Taylor in a Western entitled “ The Mysterious Rider," And those who enjoyed her polished performance as the spoiled, sophisti- cated Society girl in “ My Man Godfrey," her twenty-third picture, will realise how hard Gail has worked since she left Margaret Fitzpatrick, the budding lawyer from Alabama, behind her. 77
