He made innumerable tests, but they came to nothing, and he turned to the stage again, appearing with pay when he could, without when he couldn’t, until he was offered the film contract. Michael Whalen was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and christened Joseph Shovlin. He took his grand- father's name when he began his stage career. He is six feet two inches in height, and plays the piano well. He lives with his sister in a Hollywood hill- top home. Her father died, however, and Gertrude gave up her musical career to go on the stage. Then wireless became popular. She managed to get someone to finance a wireless station, and ran it for some time, acting as manager, announcer, piano and violin soloist, home expert and saxophone player. She left this to join a stock company and Broadway success then took her to Hollywood. Her great friend is Isabel Jewell. They worked in Broadway shows together and have mutual interests, including music. She lives by herself in Hollywood, her mother and two brothers occupying another home. Her nickname is Becky.
