The destroyer, H.M.S. Torrin, was in fact the star of the film, and her triumphs and vicissitudes formed the background of the story. " So This -was Paris ” was the story of the treachery and espionage, greed and apathy, cunning and corruption, that led to France’s downfall and took us to the entry of the Germans into Pans. “ The Foreman Went to France ” had the same period as its setting—and here again real life heroism inspired it. There was such a British foreman. It was not a story of military heroics, naval endurance or aerial dash—it was a story of the dogged persistence of a stouthearted foreman who surmounted seemingly insuperable obstacles and took in- credible risks to bring back to England the precious machinery from a French factory. “ We Shall Rise Again ” had Belgium under its German oppressors as its mainspring. Based on Oscar Millard’s sensational book. “ Uncensored," it was the story of the heroic band of Belgians who are producing a national paper for loyal patriots under the nose of the Gestapo. “ The Day Will Dawn ” was another drama inspired by the increasing resistance of loyal patriots against the Germans—this time with Norway as its background. Nazi Germany itself has been shown on the screen as a country in which its own people resent the Nazi rule of brute force. “ Underground ” was the story of two brothers—one an enthusiastic Nazi lieutenant, the other an idealist secretly struggling to overthrow the Hitler regime. Nor was the Burma Road neglected. It was touched on in “ They Met in Bombay," and it was the background of “ China Caravan." If we have no idea of the conditions, both civilian and military, in this war-torn world, it is certainly not the fault of the films-. W.
