Marion Gerth Marion Gerth, though a newcomer to British Below : Alan Ladd pictures, starred in Continental films at the age of fifteen. Bom in Vienna of an English father and Polish mother, she has been married foT nearly twelve years to an Englishmen, and has a nine-year-old son, Tony. She speaks five languages. She made her first appearance in a leading role on the British screen as the villainess in “ Front Line Kids.” Marjorie Woodworth was bom in Inglewood, California, some twenty years ago, and still lives in the house where she was bom. She was a drum majorette in the University of Southern California band when she caught the attention of a talent scout and her college career was nipped in the bud. After playing “ bits ” she had leading roles in “ Broadway Limited,” “ Niagara Falls.” Ava Gardner is the green-eyed brunette who became Mrs. Micky Rooney in 1941, having been chosen by M.G.M. as one of their starlets. She was bom in Smithfield, North Carolina, attended grammar and high school at Newport News, Virginia. During college vacation she thought she might make some extra money by becoming an adver- tising model, so she applied at an agency. A photographer suggested sending portraits to M.G.M. Ava forgot—but the photographer sent them instead. And the result was a phone call from M.G.M., and interview—and then Ava was on her way to Hollywood. She had her first role as a nurse in “ Highway to Glory.” Alan Ladd was chosen after eighteen well-known actors had been tested for the leading role in “ This Gun for Hire,” and given a long term contract by Paramount. Fair-haired for twenty-seven years of his life, his hair was dyed black for the role of the murderer. He studied dramatics at the Ben Bard school and did some work at the Pasadena Playhouse. You've preeiously seen him in “ Meet the Missus,” " Her First Romance,” “ The Black Cat," “ Petticoat Politics," “ The Reluctant Dragon,” “ Paper Bullets ” and “ Joan of Paris." MlCHAEL Rennie, the great-grandson of the builder of Waterloo Bridge, is the first of his family to become an actor. Bom in Eradford, on August 25th. 1919, he was educated at Harrogate and Cambridge. He stands six feet three and is dark and athletic. He began work in his father’s woollen mill, v/here he remained for four years, became a car salesman, without much success, then works manager of a wire rope factory at Wakefield. After that he turned to acting. Introduced to the Gaumont British casting director, he was given a contract as a small-part player and stand-in, but lack of experience got him the sack after his first opportunity to show what he could do in the acting line. "Too inexperienced ” was the verdict—so he set out to get the necessary experience, beginning by bluffing his way into the York Repertory Company. After a few’ years he thought he would try the screen again. A one- line part in George Formby’s “ Turned Out Nice Again" was followed by a tiny part in “ Pimpernel Smith.” He wras then given a s’zable role in “ Ships With Wings, followed by leading roles in “Tower of Terror” and “ The Big Blockade.” The war interrupted his acting career.
