run of successes in the “ Thin Man " series, starring William Powell and Myrna Loy, not forgetting Asta, that acme of canine intelligence. If a vote were taken for the most perfect team of two players it would be hard to keep the first award from Bill and Myrna. They are perfect partners, playing up to each other all the time, and they are all the more entertaining and amusing by the fact that they understand each other so well. As Nick Charles, famous detective, Bill pulls the wool over the eyes of his enemies as easily as he lifts a cocktail, but his cleverest tricks and elaborate plans do not deceive Myrna Loy (as Nora Charles) for a single moment. A pair that get more popular with every performance are Arthur Lucan and Kitty McShane in “ Old Mother Riley ” series. These films are farcical comedy, but there is a vein of sound common-sense philosophy running through them. Another comedy series is that of the Mexican Spitfire, in which Lupe Velez is the Mexican Spitfire and Leon Errol doubles the role of Uncle Matt and Lord Epping in his effort to solve family difficulties. Space does not permit a descrip- tion of many other popular series, but enough has been written to show that a good series will always be popular film entertainment. Lionel Barrymore as Dr. Gillespie, Alma Kruger as Molly Byrd, and Lew Ayres as Jimmy Kildare in “ Dr. Kildare's Victory." Warren William as the Lone Wolf and Eric Blore as his butler in “ Secrets of the Lone Wolf." Bottom of page : Maude Ebume, Jean Hersholt , Dorothy Lovett, and Anne Bennett in “ They Meet Again," one of the Dr. Christian series. and regarded by many as a man who is old- fashioned in his surgical methods as well as in his outlook on life. But in the end Dr. s justifies himself and invariably scores over the “ clever ” people who have despised him. If ever there was ideal material for a series it is in the tales of Tarzan. the character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his book which was a sensational best-seller. The story of the white boy who was lost in the jungle and brought up by friendly apes is one calculated to thrill boys of all nations and men who have never lost the adventurous spirit of youth. Tarzan became so proficient as a tree climber, a hunter and a super athlete by reason of his peculiar training, that when it was decided to film the tales of Tarzan pro- ducer and director must have wondered where they could find a man who could play such a role. They found him in Johnny Weissmuller, famous athlete and marvellous swimmer. So great was his prowess in the water that he won every possible championship in the ten years he competed for titles. He made a big success in all the Tarzan film series. In “ Tarzan Against the World, the fifth of the series, he wore civilised clothes for the first time. In a lighter style of films we have had a sensational Christian alway Ann Sothern and George Murphy * Cash and Carry one of t h “ Maisie ” 104
