BEAUTY AND BRAINS ^^AIL Patrick has been a breaker of two pet beliefs held by many people. Some cynical folk say that beauty and brains do not go together. Nobody could dispute Gad’s beauty, and as far as brains— Gail s first ambition was to be a lawyer and eventually the Governor of Alabama. She became a law student at Howard College, where she graduated with honours. The other pet belief is that a girl who enters for a screen contest rarely makes good. It was “ just for a lark " that Gail entered the contest run by the Paramount Film Company a number of years ago to find a “ panther woman ’’ for a film to be entitled ” Island of Lost Souls." She did not get that particular role, but she did get a film contract, and what is more she made good and has been on the screen ever since. Her more recent films include “ Reno," " My Favourite Wife,” “ The Doctor Takes a Wife," “ Gallant Sons." “ Love Crazy,” “ Kathleen," and “ We Were Dancing.” Gail comes from Birmingham, Alabama, and has black hair and brown eyes. A CURE FOR THE BLUES ^^EORGE Murphy owes his career to two people— his wife and his father. He started off as a mining engineer, but one day he met Juliette Johnson and she persuaded him to take up dancing. He became her dancing partner and also her partner in real life. His father, Mike Murphy, was a famous athletic coach, and George can thank him for his splendid physique. His father trained him to be a champion in every sport, and so the foundation of foot work for dancing was laid. Juliette eventually gave up her career—they decided that one artiste in the family was enough. George became a star in many Broadway musicals, and then went on to Hollywood and his screen career. His special recipe for curing a fit of the blues is to break into a dance. “ Never mind if you don't know any routines," he says, “ just make up some steps.” George was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on July 4th, 1904. He has brown hair, blue eyes, and is five feet eleven inches tall. 106
