\ A SINGER OF HIGH NOTE A YOUNCSTER bubbling over with the love of life and fun, Susanna Foster, because of her vivacious personality and her desire to work and forge ahead, has some- times been called the female Mickey Rooney. When she made her screen debut in “ The Great Victor Herbert,” she caused a sensation. It was amazing to think that this young girl in her ’teens could do what few singers could accomplish—reach B flat above a high C. She likes to compose music and so far has a swing number and a ballad to her credit. She was christened Susanna because she is directly related to Stephen Foster who wrote “ Oh, Susanna ! ” and when she had to choose a name for her career, what could have been more logical than “ Susanna Foster ” ? Other films in which she has '' played are “ There’s Magic in Music” and “Hearts in Springtime.” MEDICINE’S LOSS WAS SCREEN’S GAIN Opancler Arlington Bruch intended to be a doctor, but when he played in a college production of “ Journey's End,” he was seen by a screen talent scout, and overnight he was turned into a him actor and given the name of Robert Taylor. A shy young man, he was embarrassed when he first saw himself on the screen, and it was amazing that he should eventually become one of the world's biggest heart-throbs. Brown-haired, blue-eyed, he is just six feet in height. He is musical, for he can sing, play the ’cello, and is also an accomplished pianist. His greatest ambition as a youngster was to own a horse, and now that he is a very suc- cessful young man he has made horses his hobby, an interest which is shared by his wife, Barbara Stanwyck. Like most other actors Bob is a little superstitious. The ring he constantly wears is one of his superstitions. It was given to him when he was a boy, and feeling that it has brought him good luck, he has worn it ever since. Some of the more recent films in which he has played are “ Lady of the Tropics," “Remember?” “Waterloo Bridge,” “ Escape," “ Flight Command," “ Billy the Kid," “ When Ladies Meet ” and “ Johnny Eager.” 108
