»*> music, made it a smash hit. We have since had The Magic Bow, based on Manuel Komroff’s novel of Paganini’s life, for which Yehudi Me- nuhin came to England to record the music which Stewart Granger appeared to play in his role of Paganini. Paga- nini, by the way, was introduced in the French film, Symphonie Fantastique, as the first person to recognise the genius of Berlioz, whose strange, violent, tor- mented character was vividly portrayed by Jean Louis Barrault. More recently we have had Song of Scheherazade, based on an episode in the youth of Rimsky-Korsakov, the Russian composer, and Song of Love, the story of Clara and Robert Schumanri, por- trayed by Katharine Hepburn and Paul Henreid, with Robert Walker as Johannes Brahms and Henry Daniell as Liszt. Robert Walker played a modem popular composer, Jerome Kern, in Till the Clouds Roll By. Night and Day, featuring the music of Cole Porter (portrayed by Cary Grant), enabled us once more to hear compositions such as “ Night and Day,” and “ Begin the Beguine.” Rhapsody in Blue starred Robert Alda as George Gershwin. It is not so long ago that only the favoured and for- tunate could hear fine music. The men who had songs in their hearts can now bring happiness and beauty to millions. Above : Jean Pierre Aumont as Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov, the young Russian naval cadet who became a great composer, and Yvonne de Carlo as Cara de Tal- vera in “ Song of Scheheraz ade,” which is set in 1865. Right : Stephen Bekassy as Liszt, Cornel Wilde as Frederic Chopin and Merle Oberon as George Sand in the scene from “A Song to Remember,” in which Chopin is intro- duced to Paris musical society by George Sand. Right : Stewart Granger as Paganini in “ The Magic Bow.” Some of the composer-violinist’s compositions, including “ Campanella,” “ Violin Concerto No. 1 ” and “ Caprice No. 20,” were played by the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin, the first time he has made recordings for a film.
