Richard Todd as Robin Hood Medieval Pageantry in A MERICAN producers brought medieval England to our twentieth century studios when they made these two spectacular productions. The reign of Richard Coeur de Lion in the twelfth century and the misrule of his brother Prince John during his absence in the Crusades, were the background of both. The legendary adventures of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men, who joined him in Sherwood Forest to fight for freedom against the oppression of Prince John and the Normans, have lived for eight hundred years. Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn, two earlier Robins, are followed by Richard Todd. Top of page, left : The cap- tive Sheriff of Nottingham (Peter Finch) refuses to eat venison "killed by poachers” in Robin Hood’s camp, but Scathelock (Michael Hor- dern) and Stutely (Bill Owen), recently tortured by his orders, persuade him to change his mind. Below, left : Friar Tuck (fames Hayter) watches Robin Hood as he carries Maid Marian (Joan Rice) across a stream. Above: Robin Hood, with Will Scarlet (Anthony For- wood, left) and Little John (James Robertson Justice), meets Midge the Miller (Hal Osmond) and the minstrel Allan-a-Dale (Elton Hayes). Below : King Richard I (Patrick Barr), Archbishop of Canterbury (Anthony Eustrel). On the steps: Prince John (Hubert Gregg), Queen Eleanor (Martita Hunt), and the Earl of Huntingdon (Clement McCallin).
