and Stanley Holloway en- joying a cup of tea and cigarette on location in Brighton. . cmmh and Out df BRITISH STUDIOS TN the Land of Fantasy and the World of Make Believe a medieval castle rises from the leafy background of mighty trees, above stretches the tender blue of summer skies flecked by feathery clouds. Grey battlements are reflected in the still waters of the moat. The drawbridge is raised, a protection against the onslaught of a ruthless enemy, hundreds of men armed with bows and arrows, knights astride their spirited chargers. The castle, built on a stretch of the lovely Hertfordshire countryside for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer British production, “ Ivanhoe," with modifications may be used later for another film. Director Richard Thorpe knows every trick of the great Technicolor cameras that capture these wonders later to be seen on the screens of the world. Wandering across this location scene, we pause at the entrance to the studio. British workmen have transformed the vast building into the magnificent interior of Torquilstone Castle, the scene of Sir Walter Scott’s immortal story, “ Ivanhoe.” Famous stars with world-wide reputations are here. Michael Wild- ing visited lizabeth Taylor while she was over here playing Rebecca in % “ Ivanhoe.” Top of page : Three Technicolor cameras are seen trained on a vast outdoor set for jousting scenes of M.G.M.'s " Ivanhoe.” Director Richard Thorpe (in white shirt) is walking between cameras in foreground. In the background is another of the film's immense sets, Torquilstone Castle, two years in building for the film. Noel Coward (centre), Roland Culver and Nigel Patrxch (right) met at the Arts Council offices in St. James’s Square, London, during the filming of one of Somerset Maugham's famous trio of stories which made " Encore.” At Pinewood, later, three Noel Coward playlets were filmed as one film — ” Fumed Oak,” " Red Peppers ” and " Ways and Means.”
