It would be unfair to label every picture with an outdoor setting in the West as just another Western, because with a little imagination, a dash of character work and seasoned with humour, suspense and action, a film dish to suit any audience can be produced. Wells Fargo was such a film—and to-day Powder River is another. Rory Calhoun, whose pre-film work included logging, ranching and ranging, asked his studio to give him a film in which he had a chance to shoot, a chance to ride a horse, and a film w r ith more action than dialogue in it. He had previously done good work in Way of a Gaucho and studio executives were pleased with his possibilities as a Western star. He and his wife, the former Lita Baron, who were married in 1948, marked their fourth anniversary by moving from the flat in which they had lived to a house in Beverly Hills, part of the old Will Rogers estate. Powder River gave Corinne Calvet her first role in a Western. “ All my French friends will be very jealous of me,” she said, admitting that she was playing her role in a bold manner. Cameron Mitchell finished his role in this film in time to get on an aircraft for Germany, to star in Man on a Tightrope. Steve Cochran, after trying bis luck unavailingly in Hollywood in 1937, went on the stage, and from there he was brought back to the screen. Previously he had been cowpuncher, railway hand, fireman, store detective, shipyard worker and carpenter. He was first seen in Booked on Suspicion in 1946. One of the busiest of all Western stars is Roy Rogers, who Was given his first chance to act in a Gene Autry film in 1937. Since 1939 he has starred in just over seventy films—all Westerns—in which he sings as well as acts. His horse.
