Claire Trevor and John Wayne in " Stage- coach," the film which brought Westerns into new repute in 1939. Left : Rex A lien and Koko, his horse, are a pair of newer con- tenders for Western popularity. Above, left : Tyrone Power in Brian Donlevy and Ella “ Macdonald of the Canadian Raines in “ Ride the Man Mounties," showing the impressive Down." scenery in which it was filmed. Macdonald of the Canadian Mounties is a film of the Royal North West Mounted Police, and as usual in dealing with this force and their proud boast that they “ always get their man,” it was thrilling and exciting in the making as well as the seeing Tyrone Power, in the starring role of Constable Duncan MacDonald, played w-hat he described as the most physically exacting role in his career since, in 1936, he leapt to fame in Lloyd's of London. Real life exploits from the early days of the “ Mounties ” have been used as a basis foi the film. Joel McCrea is another star who began acting in 1927, and after appearing in numerous films, turned to the Western with thankfulness and pleasure, and it is in Westerns that he has scored his greatest successes. Playing opposite him in Lone Hand was Barbara Hale, whom we first saw in 1944 in Higher and Higher, and Jimmy Hunt, who began screen work in 1948 and has done work in some twenty films since then. John Wayne is yet another star whose career has been event- ful and thrilling. He appeared in 1939 in Stagecoach, a W’estem which nobody who has seen it can ever forget. Irish born Brian Donlevy, who moved to the U.S.A. when he was only ten months old, left a successful Broadway career to appear in Barbary Coast, which we saw in 1936. He has appeared in something like sixty films since then, of which about one-third have been Westerns. Ride the Man Down, in which he stars with Ella Raines, is set in 1892. Rex Allen is one of the latest and most successful younger Western stars. His films include Trail of Robin Hood, 1 Dream of Jeanie, Hills of Oklahoma and Thunder in God’s Country. Joel McCrea and his film son, Jimmy Hunt, prepare to take Barbara Hale and her brother, Wesley Morgan, for a ride in " Lone Hand."
