It was Cimarron which brought Irene Dunne fame after playing in one or two musicals in Hollywood, and it was Apache War Smoke which gave Barbara Ruick another leg up the ladder to success, after she had appeared in Invitation, Featless Fagan and You for Me. She was playing opposite Gilbert Roland, who made his first film as an extra in 1925 and has been acting ever since, his recent films including The Bad and the Beautiful, and The Miracle of Fatima. It was nearly ten years later that Gene Lockhart began his screen career after making his name on the stage, since when he has appeared in good roles in over a hundred films. Gene Autry’s first film as a big star was seen over here in 1937, The Big Show. Since then he has been starring in numberless Western films and is the hero of all small boys—as well as many grown ups. He was born in Tioga, Texas, and it was on the advice of the late Will Rogers that he left his job on the railway, where he was working. Gene Autry, his songs and his horse. Champion, still rank among the top favourites in the ranks of Western heroes. Charlton Heston is the latest star to appear in a Western —he has in fact only been acting for the screen since 1951. He was born in Evanston, Illinois, and after serving in the Aleutians with the American Air Force during the war, he and his wife began their careers again in North Carolina. The following year he made a hit on Broadway and in Tele- vision. His films include Dark City, The Greatest Show on Earth, The Savage and Ruby Gentry.
