r^ARA WILLIAMS. of the flaming red hair, bronze gold skin and dancing brown eyes, was first seen by filmgoers as Gretchen Barry in Happy Land. Yet less than three months before she was given this part, she had been broke in New York. Saying that she could dance she had been hired for a . touring show, but when it was discovered that she could not dance, she was, natur- ally sacked. Seeing how discouraged she was, and knowing that she wanted only to get back to her home in Hollywood, the other girls in the show clubbed together and paid her fare. A few days later she was ap- pearing in a little theatre play, and a week later she was signed to a contract which brought her to the screen. Some of the films in which she has been seen are In The Meantime Darling, Boomerang, Sitting Pretty, The Saxon Charm, Knock On Any Door, The Girl Next Door, and The Great Diamond Robbery. OEING the son of a famous comedian, it seemed natural that PATRIC DOONAN should go on the stage. But his real ambition was to become a journal- ist, and it was only after he failed to meet success in this direction that, in desperation, he turned to the theatre. After working as an assistant manager, and playing extra parts in films, he decided to make acting his career. A collector of books, he also has an extensive musical library of serious music and modern jazz. "D ED-HAIRED, freckled faced PHYLLIS KIRK has impressed those she has met with her beauty and brains. Even while still at school she knew what she wanted to be—an actress. On graduating she became a waitress in New York, then a shop assistant and later a model, all with the one object in view—to get a job as an actress. She took dramatic and dancing lessons under some of the best coaches. Her modelling work had brought her to the attention of a film producer, but she steadfastly refused to go to Hollywood until she had gained some experience on Broadway. Eventually she accepted the offer of a role in Our Very Own.
