Westerns have attracted many big stars—few there are, indeed, who have not at one time or other played in a Western. Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck, who first appeared together in Remember the Night, starred in The Moonlighter, a Western set in 1912, about a “ moon- lighter,” or a man who rustled cattle at night and was respected by cowboys for his skill with a lariat, roping wild steers in the darkness, as well as hated for the depredations he made in their stock. Joan Crawford starred for the first time in a talking Western in Johnny Guitar. She had appeared back in 1927 in a Western, Winners of the Wilderness, but it is doubtful whether many remember it: Johnny Guitar was filmed in colour in the spectacular beauty of North Arizona, the location for many popular Westerns. Who would have expected Doris Day to put on trousers and boots, as she did for Calamity Jane, in which she took the role of an Indian woman scout who could ride a horse and shoot with the toughest man ? In this delightful comedy, she also sang and played romantic scenes with Howard Keel, who had previously appeared in Annie Get Your Gun. William Holden, who won the Academy Award for his work in Stalag 17, starred in Escape from Fort Bravo, filmed in Death Valley and New Mexico.
