Other charity premieres during the screen season of 1954 which were graced by the presence of Royalty included that of September 15th, where Princess Alice attended the premiere of Marlon Brando (w-inner of the year 1954 the Academy Aw^lrd " Oscar ” for the best acting of the year) in On the Waterfront, a gripping film of trouble among the stevedores and dockers of New York harbour. The film was based on a series of articles, " Crime on the Waterfront,” which won the Pulitzer prize for reporting in 1949. H.R.H. the Duchess of Gloucester was present at the premiere of the re-issue of Modern Times, a film .shown here in 1936, which Charles Chaplin wrote, starred in. and directed.
