Alan Ladd, June A Hyson and James Whit- more in “ The M c C o n n e I I Story." Top right: Bob and Melba Mathias in " The Bob M at hi as Story.'' Glenn Ford, Eleanor Parker and Roger Moore in ■' Interrupted Melody," the story of M ar- jorie Lawrence's life. Extreme right : Marjorie Lawrence herself. "O EAL p>eople have often been brought to the screen by reel stars. The past year has been no exception. Interrupted Melody, for instance, is based on the hfe story of Marjorie Lawrence, the opera singer, who at the height of her fame was stricken with infantile paralysis. The film tells of her courage when, inspired by her devoted husband, Tom King, she began her career again and sang on ojjera and concert stages sitting in a wheel chair. Love Me or Leave Me stars Doris Day as Ruth Etting, whose glorious voice and gaiety made her the sweetheart of wireless, records and the Ziegfeld Follies. As Interrupted Melody had opportunity for operatic arias, so this film gives plenty of room to popular songs of the nineteen-twenties, with Doris Day singing them. Alan Ladd and June Allyson co-star delightfully in The McConnell Story, a drama of a U.S. air pilot who eventually crashes, leaving his wife to face the world alone. Do you remember the wonderful p>erformance which June Allyson gave in The Glenn Miller Story, in which James Stewart played the role of the famous and popular musician ? A more unusual film is that of a popular athlete’s life so far—and in The Bob Mathias Story the athlete himself has the starring role.
