Left . Frank Sinatra as Joe E. Lewis, with Jeanne Crain, The 1920’s are again brought to life in Beau James, with which Bob Hope followed his portrayal of Eddie Foy in The Seven Little Foys, one of the most successful films of his successful career. Beau James tells of the life of Jimmy Walker, mayor of New York from 1925 to 1932. and of his friendship with the Broadway singing star Betty Compton, who became his second wife. Jack Benny and Schnozzle Durante play them- selves in this film. The same period was used as the background for Love Me or Leave Me, which starred Doris Day as Ruth Etting, whose appealing voice and charming personality made her the delight of broadcasting, recording, the Ziegfeld Follies and silent films. It told of her meteoric rise to fame, beginning in a third-rate night club and ending in the opulence of the Ziegfeld Follies, and of her gratitude to the man who helped her, an aggressive, limping man known as “ the Gimp,” which made her marry him and nearly led to tragedy when he found that she loved a pianist who had coached her when she began her career and who came into her life again as musical director of her first Hollywood film. The Joker is Wild is set in the early 1930s in Chicago, and tells the story of America’s most beloved night-club vit and comedian, Joe E. Lewis. It tells of his mauling by three toughs of a speakeasy owner he had left to improve his chances, and how he is brought to tremendous popularity when Sophie Tucker spotlights him during a big benefit show. It also tells of the love of a society girl for him and his marriage to a showgirl. And it ends on a tragically lonely note — for night clubs must go on — and J oe E. Lewis must go on with them. Bob Hope appears as Jimmy Walker, with Schnozzle Durante and Jack Benny as themselves in a scene from “ Beau James." Cameron Mitchell, James Cagney and Doris Dav in a scene from " Love Me or Leave Me," the film which told the dramatic story of Ruth Etling’s climb to fame. Left : Ruth Etting, who was known as the “ Harvest Moon Girl," as she appeared in a film musical comedy, “ Music in Her Hair."
