Flippen, Gordon MacRae, Gene Nelson and Marc Platt. How many of my readers can remember that magnificent yet depressing film The Good Earth, adapted from Pearl Buck's novel ? It was a Chinese story and told of the work and worry of a farmer and his wife from the time of their marriage until the marriage of their eldest son. It was brilliantly acted by the entire cast. An American farmer, played by Rock Hudson, was the hero of Giant, which dealt with Texas and its people as it told the story of the marriage of the owner of a half-million-acre cattle ranch to a Maryland girl, and of vast wealth which came from the oil gushing from their land. This, by the way, was James Dean's third and last film. Oklahoma!, set in 1906, came to the screen from the stage where it had added to the laurels won by Rodgers and Hammerstein for their previous productions by breaking records everywhere it was shown. It was the musical version of a play by Lynn Riggs “ Green Grow the Lilacs,” and told the story of Laurey, Curly and hired man Jud, against superbly beautiful backgrounds (filmed in Arizona) and included many attractive songs, among them “ Oh, What a Beautiful Momin’,” “ I Cain't Say No ” and “ Out of My Dreams.” The American Civil War again was the background of Friendly Persuasion, a charming two-and-a-quarter-hour film of a Quaker family living in South Indiana. It was based on a novel by Jessamyn West and set in 1862, dealing with the various conflicts with conscience of members of the family. (
