David Lean, who flew to Hollywood to attend the presen- tation, received the award from SophiaLoren for directing''The Bridge on the River Kwai.” Miyoshi Umeki, Jean Simmons, who accepted the " Oscar " for winner Alec Guinness as he was in London, Sam Spiegel, producer of the best picture, “ The Bridge on the River Kwai,” Joanne Woodward, best actress in " Three Faces of Eve ” and Red Buttons for ” Sayonara."
