The Lone Ranger and Tonto in “ The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold.” After the brawl, Glenn Ford looks askance at Shirley MacLaine whenhehas knocked doun Mickey Shaughnessy in “ The Sheepman." Jorge Trevitio, Gilbert Roland and Jock Mahoney in " The Western Story." You may think that film-making in the desert would be regarded as ideal for the man who controls the sound. According to Philip Mitchell, the “ mixer ” for The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold, it may seem silent, but it certainly is not. At Rattlesnake Pass, where some of the scenes were shot, it seemed as if they were surrounded by rattlesnakes which nearly drowned the dialogue. It was not for several days that the “ rattlesnakes " were discovered to be desert locusts, whose whirring noise resembles a rattle. Near the Papago Indian Reservation, bleating goats, squealing pigs and coughing horses, their throats irritated by desert dust, all offered other noises that were not appreciated. Worst of all were the turkeys, which gobbled raucously and loudly every time the assistant director blew his whistle as a signal for silence to start shooting the film. Silence was not achieved until he substituted a cowbell for his whistle ! It is seldom that one gets much humour in Western films except for the more obvious moments. That was one of the reasons why The Sheepman was so appreciated by those who saw it. It is the story of a sheep owner who brings his herds into country run by hostile cattlemen and decides to stay there despite threats and the concern of a pretty girl. The battle between them was told with quiet, at times sardonic humour, and was beautifully acted by Glenn Ford, Shirley MacLaine, Leslie Nielsen and Mickey Shaugh- nessy, whom you may recall as the punch-drunk fighter in Designing Woman, as the ex-convict in Jailhouse Rock, and the sailor in Don't Go Near the Water. Edgar Buchanan was in The Sheepman, as he was in Law of the Trigger, which starred Fred Mac Murray and John Ericson. In Alan from God's Country, George Montgomery starred. It told of a former law officer marked for death by a gang which controls a lawless frontier town in Montana Territory. The Western Story starred Jock Mahoney, who has fast been climbing the ladder of popularity. With him in it was Gilbert Roland, who has been acting since the silent days. Randy Stuart and George Montgomery in “ Man from God's Country." John Ericson, Edgar Buchanan and Fred AlacMurray in " Law of the Trigger."
