An ideal place to use the dialogue hook can come with groping, unfinished speech, as in: HELENE (groping) It's hard to explain, mother, it's . . . well . . . MOTHER (with a smile) The measles? HELENE (still groping) Oh, no, mother! It's . . . oh . . . MOTHER It's love, dear. I know all the symptoms. A line of speech that is in agreement, or in disagreement, with a preceding line, will serve ideally as a dialogue hook, as in: BLACKY I was a damn fool, sheriff!
