FRANKIE AVALON SINGS, ACTS, DANCES AGAIN IN NEW MUSICAL HIT "MUSCLE BEACH PARTY" The singin’, swingin’, dancin’ and romantic Frankie Avalon, who scored the biggest hit of his film career in “Beach Party,’ is back again in the same entertaining groove in American International’s new ‘‘Muscle Beach Party.” Frankie also is back again opposite lovely Annette Funicello in the color and Panavision musical comedy, OPEMin gat wae SNe eee at ties Se Pa eo ee theatre, which stars the two youngsters and Luciana Paluzzi, John Ashley, Don Rickles, Peter Turgeon and Jody McCrea. ‘‘Muscle Beach Party’ also stars Dick Dale, Candy Johnson and Morey Amsterdam ; introduces ‘‘Little Stevie’? Wonder and stars Buddy Hackett as “the rich business manager.” Once again, too, in his new film Frankie sings rock and roll dancing and surfing rhythms as well as popular ballads as he displays his versatile talents in the rollicking musical story of young love and surfers. The Philadelphia-born Avalon (September 18, 1940) showed his singing talent at the age of six, but it was his skill with a trumpet which brought him into show business in his early teens. As a young musical prodigy, Frankie won numerous guest engagements on top TV and radio shows and then at 14 he formed his own musical group which began playing with the nation’s top bands. It was while he was playing with his musical group that he resurrected his latent singing talent which soon skyrocketed him to national fame as the country’s most promising young singing star. His first big record hit, called ‘‘De De Dinah,” firmly established him in the top ranks of popular vocalists and he started branching out with solo engagements in night clubs and on radio and TV. Next came calls from Hollywood and the beginning of another career as a promising serious actor with roles in such films as “The Alamo,” with John Wayne, and “Panic In Year Zero!,” with Ray Milland. On January 18, 1963, Frankie married Kay Diebel and their first child, Frankie, Jr. arrived last October. The young couple live in Toluca Lake, just outside of Hollywood. Meanwhile, Frankie’s career, spurred by his marriage, continues on FRANKIE AVALON stars with Annette Funicello in American International’s color and Panavision musical comedy, ‘‘Muscle Beach Panty;7 4OPening = S252. she at Theis ee Wee theatre. 1 COL. Frankie, between his musical comedy film-making for American International, appears as an actor on leading TV dramatic shows and as a singer on top TV variety shows. He will make personal appearance tours this spring for ““Muscle Beach Party” similar to his top crowd-drawing appearances last year for ‘“‘Beach Party.” Frankie’s fan mail has substantially increased since he made his first singing and dancing appearance in “Beach Party” and his record sales are mounting to again firmly establish him as one of America’s top musical personalities. The yacht and helicopter seen in many of the beach scenes are the real thing, the 46-foot vessel belonging to a wealthy industrialist and the helicopter being used both for both scenes and air photography. Also used in the production, for scenes on the beach road involving Don Rickles, Buddy Hackett, and Luciana Paluzzi, was an unusual Rolls Royce that is one of only three ever made. It dates from 1924 and is called the Silver Ghost and was originally made for the personal physician of King George V. A group of less expensive automotive collector’s items also were used in scenes near the beaches on California’s famed Pacific Coast Highway. These were one of the most unusual groups of surfers’ cars ever assembled, led by a _ 1924 bright orange-colored Model-T convertible driven by Frankie Avalon with Annette Funicello as passenger. Next in the odd surfers’ auto procession came an old bright red fire engine dating back to the late 1920’s. This was ridden by Dick Dale and his Del-Tones while they played their wild surfing music. Also in the surfers’ caravan was a box-like wooden Model-T pickup truck, with John Ashley driving and accompanied by Candy Johnson, plus an eye-catching bright powder-blue, stripped down, chrome-engined drag roadster driven by Jody McCrea. Outstanding interior set, as in AIP’s earlier “Beach Party,” is the new Cappy’s joint, teen-age hangout and night spot. Once again, the place is garishly decorated with bizarre and colorful modern art and with wood and metal sculpture. Three new features never seen before are featured in Canpy’s for “Muscle Beach Party:” a golden elevator cage occupied by Morey Amsterdam ; fullcolor surfer’s caricature paintings by Michael Dormer and Lee Teacher, and about a half-dozen real surfboards just leaning against the walls. Fill the above setting with lively dancing and singing surfers, eight big musclemen and the stars of ‘Muscle Beach Party” and the result is the liveliest musical comedy entertainment of the year. Candy Johnson, the surprise hit of “Beach Party,” gets a bigger and better opportunity to show off her amazing twist perpetual motion dancing in the new “Muscle Beach Party.” ee GROWN-UP ANNETTE FUNICELLO BIDS FOR TOP TEEN IDOL SPOT IN NEW "MUSCLE BEACH PARTY" Move over Sandra Dee and Ann-Margaret and make way for shapely, raven-tressed Annette Funicello as top feminine teen-age movie idol! These young contemporaries form a unique fan nucleus unmatched by any other young film star. Today Annette not only possesses an eye-catching, whistle-provoking figure, but an acting talent — both serious and comedic — that has matured with her years. She also maintains her charming singing voice which has made her records among the most popular in the nation with at least two new ballads in ‘‘Muscle Beach Party” destined to add to her Hit Parade stature. Born on October 22, 1942, in Utica, New York, her family migrated to Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley when she was four. Annette’s father owns a garage business in the area, while her attractive mother runs the family home in Encino and takes care of two younger sons, Joe, 18, and Michael, 12. She started studying dancing at the age of five and won her first beauty contest, ‘““Miss Willow Lake”’ at nine and began a_ part-time modeling career. Annett, at 13, got her big break with the lead role in a “Ballet versus Jive’ presentation in nearby Burbank, the home of Walt Disney Studios. Her ‘break’? came when Disney himself chanced to witness one of her performances. He promptly signed her up as one of the original Mouseketeers on his ‘Mickey Mouse Club” television show to firmly launch her on her career. Out of the 24 young Mouseketeers, the last-to-be-hired Annette immediately was singled out by the nation’s young TV fans as _ their favorite. Soon she was cast in other Disney features and later had an entire TV series of her own called “Annette.” ANNETTE FUNICELLO stars with Frankie Avalon in American International’s color and Panavision musical comedy, ‘‘Muscle Beach Party;:) Openings? ee ee at 1 COL. As she grew up, she branched out to star in Disney feature length films and in top outside TV shows. With her twenty-first year, Annette’s exclusive contract with Disney expired and she got a chance to play her first grown-up role in a non-Disney picture. That role was her second big lifetime ‘‘break” — opposite Frankie Avalon in American International’s big musical comedy hit ‘Beach Party.” This spring, just before beginning work on her third musical comedy for AIP, ‘Bikini Beach,’ Annette will make a personal appearance tour in England for “Beach Party” and then returns home for “Muscle Beach Party” personal appearances as well. Annette has many hobbies, including a large stuffed animal collection, and is also very athletic, favoring horseback riding, swimming and roller skating. Right now she is too busy with her career to have any romantic entanglements, but she is very definite about wanting to marry and raise a family . . . when the right man comes along, preferably one NOT in show business.
