SURFING IS ANCIENT SPORT DATING BACK CENTURIES TO SOUTH SEA, HAWAIIAN ISLANDS The Western world first discovered surfing when Captain Cook discovered the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1778 and found a land where entire villages, commoners as well as royalty, would desert work to take advantage of a good “south swell.” Today’s young men and women living near the ocean are as rabid fans of the sport which is celebrated in American Inter, national’s new musical comedy “Muscle Beach Party.” Historians, through inquiry and research, have theorized that surfing originated in the dawn of the civilization of Oceania, probably in ancient Polynesia (Tahiti, etc.) from which place Hawaii was settled by surfers in migrations centering around 800 and 1100 A.D. Then, as now, surfing style was determined by the kinds of boards that were used. However, in the early Kingdom of Hawaii only members of the royal family were able to surf with light balsa-type wood boards. Common Hawaiians had to do-as best they could in the surf with heavy wood boards. According to historical accounts, the early surfers seldom stood on their boards, but preferred to ride the waves kneeling or lying down. In this way they could slide (ride at an angle to the wave) just as surfers do today, but the angle was less sharp. When Hawaii was dominated by the Americans in the nineteenth century, the natives temporarily submerged their surfing until the sport was revived at famed Waikiki Beach in 1907 by Alexander Ford’s Outrigger Canoe Club. Although newspapers record some use of surfboards at Southern California’s Redondo Beach in 1908 and reports were that surfboards were seen earlier in Australia and South Africa, Waikiki remained the center of surfing activity until World War IT. Surfing’s recent popular growth, as depicted by Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello and the other young stars of ‘Muscle Beach Party,” stems from the development of the modern fiberglass-coated polyurethane board. These modern surfboards average about nine feet long, compared to the 12 to 18 foot lengths of old Hawaiian boards. Modern boards are wider and thinner and most important, lighter and have skegs, or fins, to make them steadier and easier to handle. Utilizing this improved modern equipment, such young California surfers as those in “Muscle Beach Party’ — Mickey Dora, Johnny Fain, Mike Diffenderfer, Mike Nader, Ed Garner, and for the girls, Linda Benson, took the lead in: creating the new “hot-dogging”’ style of surfing. “Hot-dogging”’ includes fast turning, walking up and back on the board, riding with toes over the nose, crouching “in the tube” and the rest of the almost dare-devil feats of today’s young surfers. These feats, which only a few years ago were the exclusive property of maybe 20 to 30 of the world’s best surfers, today are the standard repertoire of thousands of youngsters. Not only has the new style spread throughout the surfing world, but the sport has spread throughout the world. Today every continent, save Antartica, has surfers. The most popular surfing spots with the most surfers, outside of Hawaii and California, are Australia, Peru, South Africa and New Zealand. However, there are also many in France, Great Britain, Israel, Ceylon, and Brazil. In the United States, California no longer has a surfing monopoly with young surfers now braving the waves off New York, New Jersey, Florida, Virginia and Texas. Surfers even have invaded Lake Michigan and other of the Great Lakes. In addition, while favoring steak, they do so to the exclusion of most other meats and eat beef from two to three times daily and just about every day. Add milk, nuts, fruits, health foods and vitamins and you have just about the total diet of the “Muscle Beach Party’ musclemen. Former “Mr. America” Larry Scott exists mainly on steak, cottage cheese, milk, butter and cashew nuts, while “Mr. America’? Gene Shuey concentrates strictly on steak and cottage cheese. Rock Stevens, the former “Mr. Hercules” and ‘Mr. International Health” who portrays “Mr. Galaxy” in the musical comedy, eats only steak and cottage cheese twice daily plus 200 food supplement vitamin pills daily and a high protein special drink. The same pattern is followed by Bob Seven, Steve Merjanian, Chester Yorton, Gordon Cohn and Dan Haggerty — all of whom also have great big muscles too. Dick Dale and Morey Amsterd7m also star, with ‘Little Stevie’ Wonder introduced in the film and Buddy Hackett starred as “the rich business manager.” Candy was born 23 years ago in San Gabriel, California, just outside of Los Angeles. The daughter of an engineer, she had lessons in tap dancing at age 5, then went to Afro-Cuban dancing and had four years of dramatics before graduating from San Gabriel High School. It wasn’t until -she found the twist, soon after her graduation, that people began to notice her. It all began when she went to a big Twist show featuring Chubby Checker and other stars at the famed Hollywood Palladium. When she went to buy tickets for the show, she accidently caught the eye of a young agent named Red Gilson who liked her looks and asked her if she could dance inasmuch as he was looking for a girl like her to perform with a musical group he was getting up. Candy said she was a dancer, soon talked over the proposition with her parents, won their permission and quit her job as a long distance operator with the telephone company. That was the beginning of her career and before long her amzing twist dancing won her star billing with the musical group known as “The Exciters.” Since then she has become the rage of top spots in Las Vegas, Palm Springs, and other big Western and Southwestern resorts. Once heavier, she now weighs a little over one hundred pounds and just can’t seem to put on weight. Her weight problem is no mystery to those who have seen her in action — she spends from four to five hours every evening in violent revolving dance gyrations. Candy twists backwards, forwards, up and down and side to side — literally perpetual motion and her daily routine is always ‘‘on the go.” “T need 10 to 12 hours sleep a night and I have to take a nap of an hour and a half before every performance,” she says. She will lose three to four pounds a night and put it right back on again afterwards. For quick energy she drinks a concoction of yeast, wheat germ, eggs, milk and honey. Her “relexation” is roller skating, ice skating and swimming — any kind of action. so long as she doesn’t have to be still. She has an excess of exhuberance, but she’s basically a healthy wholesome kid who some day would like to get married — after she succeeds as a career girl. "Mr. Hercules" Cast As "Mr. Galaxy” In New Musical Comedy When you have the build and the physique of the strongest man in the world, it’s almost impossible to avoid type-casting as a strong man.
